In my previous post From human anatomy to fashion illustrationI was offering you some tips on how to start studying the human anatomy in order to transform it into a fashion sketch or a fashion illustration.
In this post I will give you some examples through these fashion drawings I just finished just for you. Study them and make some exercises. Do not forget to flip rotate them to double the poses, as always. Stay focused and observe the lines, how I use contrast and smooth details, how I use gradient and highlights and do the same. The more you repeat the exercises proposed on my Fashion teaching site, the better.
I used only pencil to show you how “colorful” the graphite of a 8B black pencil can be. Practically, you don’t need color. The line and the pressure of your hand drawing will do the thing. Try to remember all the previous exercises we did together and have courage with this new one.
– in fashion sketching there is no need to shade everything: one leg is enough, one shoulder is enough or one detail will simply do
– the human face is not very important: usually designers tend to forget it or just to suggest is because it is more expressive to suggest than to show everything. Study some famous fashion sketches to see the solutions the fashion designers found.
– be as expressive as possible: when drawing the accessories, when hatching, when using the 3 elements of visual communication: dots, lines and surfaces
– do not over-polish the human figure – it is always better to suggest, do not forget!
Any questions? If so, do not hesitate to leave me a comment with your concern. And also, if you have some studies, some sketches and you want to share, feel free to send me an email here: firstname.lastname@example.org together with your questions and drawings and I will reply.
